Europe can win the AI race - announcing first close of €100 million

From our team
Europe can win the AI race - announcing first close of €100 million
We are excited to share our new fund with a target of €130 million, dedicated to supporting European category-defining software companies. We are also updating our investment thesis and will increase the emphasis on AI-driven data & software with our investment decisions.

The new fund is at its core a strong bet on the future of Europe as the building ground for the next generation of AI and data pioneers. AI is increasingly taking on human tasks while driving unprecedented productivity and innovation. We've seen firsthand how this transformation is reshaping how businesses operate, create, and deliver value. The key to succeeding depends now, more than ever, on data quality, quantity, and accessibility. Data will be the ultimate moat in AI development for years to come — and that is where we are focusing as early-stage investors.

Against this backdrop, we're supporting Europe's brightest companies driving the data economy forward. We invest in companies that are pioneering in both data and AI, and have set their sights from Europe to global category leadership. Our investments are in ambitious, legacy-shaking early-stage teams with a proven product-market fit and growing traction.

The work has already started. Our first investment from the new fund was in Embeddable, a customer-facing analytics startup, back in Q4 of 2024. Embeddable is not just building analytics tools; they are reimagining how developers use data to empower businesses and their customers. Also recently, we invested in Dreamfold, an AI-driven protein search and design company based in Montreal. Dreamfold is a pioneering generative machine learning company, developing complex proteins with the goal of discovering breakthrough medicines.

It goes without saying that even with the new fund and an updated investment thesis, our philosophy will stay the same. We will continue to leverage our own technical, ex-founder-led approach to support our portfolio companies, developing their products, in growing their business, and finding the necessary networks to scale.

With over two decades of building and investing in global category leaders, we look forward to this next era.

What founders get wrong about speed and scale

Every founder faces the same question: how fast should you go? In conversation with our Venture Partner, Duleepa “Dups” Wijayawardhana, we explored why so many startups struggle to balance speed, quality and scale, and how to get it right (at least most of the time). As Dups puts it, for every rule there is an exception, and for every exception there is something to learn.

Quantum computing in Europe: lessons from IQM and OpenOcean

When we met Jan Goetz, Professor Mikko Möttönen and the rest of the IQM founding team in late 2018, we knew we were seeing something rare. The science was hard to grasp, even for my colleague Patrik Backman, who had studied physics and some quantum theory, but the ambition was unmistakable.
